Unknown Masses in Sabang to Petamburan Clashes

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia - Mass clashes on May 22 with security forces disrupted a number of community activities. Hasan for example. He was upset because because of the clash he was trapped and could not go home until Thursday (23/5).

"Hopefully it's finished soon," complained Hasan while chatting with CNNIndonesia.com on Jalan Sabang, Central Jakarta.

Hasan worked in a restaurant located on the road. On Wednesday (5/22), the restaurant said he had opened.

"Before breaking fast, open it. Serve people who want to open it, but close it again," he said.

Until Thursday (5/23) morning, he claimed to be trapped in a restaurant with a colleague due to a never-ending clash along Jalan Agus Salim, MH Thamrin, Wahid Hasyim to Jalan Sabang.

"You can't go home, afraid to leave the restaurant," he said, claiming to live in Central Jakarta.

The restaurant where he worked also did not escape the target of the mob. The restaurant's windshield broke with a mass stone throw.

Hasan said that for 31 years working around Jalan Sabang, not one of the masses he knew. He said, it was an independent, wild mob.

In fact, he dared to make sure the people involved in the conflict with the police were not local residents.

"I have been living here since 1988, I know the people here," Hasan said.

The riot that spread to Jalan Sabang began with a mass action that rejected the election results in front of the Bawaslu Building, Jalan MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta. Riot occurred since Tuesday (5/22) afternoon and continued until Wednesday (23/5).

Riots in front of the Bawaslu Building took place with the tension rising and falling. Since it lasted until 00.00 WIB, the tension of the riots counted up five times.

The tense atmosphere on Wednesday (5/22) broke out at around 18.20 WIB. After maghrib, officials began to remind the masses to disperse. But, the masses refused. The apparatus then released tear gas towards the crowd. The riots lasted for approximately 40 minutes.

Officials continue to ask the masses to disperse themselves. Police also seemed to have had time to negotiate with a number of representatives from the masses.

However, the riots broke out again at 8:12 p.m. or a few minutes after the Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives Fadli Zon and BPN member Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno were on location.

In this second riot, the masses began using firecrackers and fireworks. The tension of the riots became increasingly high after the masses directed firecrackers to the guard officers and made barricades.

The apparatus responds to the mass attack by releasing tear gas. However, the response of the apparatus did not make the mass of protesters tremble.

Their actions seemed even bolder, this time they threw a number of bottles filled with oil and burned to the authorities.

The various appeals and warnings that were constantly conveyed by the police did not get a positive response from the masses. Until 9:45 p.m. WIB, the masses in front of Bawaslu still looked anarchic by throwing police and military security forces on various objects such as stones, bottles and firecrackers.

The police then mobilized water cannon cars to repel the masses who did not disperse. The apparatus finally dispersed the masses and took control of the entire front area of the Bawaslu Building at the beginning of 22.09 WIB.

Clashes not only occur around Bawaslu. Clashes also occurred in Slipi, West Jakarta. The mob had set fire to two police buses in the area. Massa tried to control Jalan Brigjen Katamso, West Jakarta since Wednesday morning.

Residents also said they were furious with the riots. A community leader who lives in Slipi Abdul Rohim did not know the faces of the people involved in the clash. Abdul said, even if there were citizens, maybe just looking around.

"I have never seen those faces," Abdul said.

He regretted the incident because he had made a mess of his territory. Even Abdul said the residents were not calm in worshiping because of the incident yesterday.

"Just imagine, our time is again tarawih suddenly kissing tear gas. It's not good," he said.

Meanwhile, a number of residents and TNI officers guarded security around the Petamburan area, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (23/5) morning. In addition to maintaining environmental security, residents also use it to wait for sahur.

"Later when Sahur is just back home," said a resident.
