Slovakia Will Welcome First Woman President
Jakarta, CNN Indonesia - A woman from an anti-corruption activist, Zuzana Caputova is expected to become Slovakia's first female president. The country is holding a second round of presidential elections on Saturday (3/30).
The election was held after a year commemorating the murder of a journalist that triggered mass protests and calls for change. Zuzana, 45, who is also an environmental lawyer, is projected to win against the ruling party candidate Maros Sefcovic who is also the European Union's energy commissioner.
Caputova, who had no experience in political office and carried the slogan "Standing for Crime", got 55.20 percent of the vote according to a survey conducted by the Focus organization, on the eve of the second round.
"This campaign has shown that values such as humanism, solidarity and truth are important to our society," Caputova said in a speech, quoted by AFP on Saturday (30/3).
Poor Caputova is in the world of advocacy, she won the 2016 award for successfully blocking the planned landfill in Pezinok's hometown.
Recently, he took to the streets along with tens of thousands of other anti-government protesters after investigative journalist Jan Kuciak was shot dead with his fiance in February 2018. He was preparing to publish a story about alleged relations between Slovak politicians and the Italian mafia .
The killings forced the then Prime Minister Robert Fico to resign but he remained the leader of the Smer-SD party, a group assessed by the prime minister's current ally. Five people have been indicted, including a millionaire businessman with alleged Smer-SD relations suspected of ordering murder.
Speaking to AFP about the campaign, Caputova said that if elected she would initiate systematic changes, one of which was removing prosecutors and police from political influence.
